Less than a week after my 6km milestone I was hit with a nasty surprise. Here I am thinking, oh yeah got the flu shot, no problem but of course there is another strain going around which renders the flu shot I took ineffective. So I think, that’s what sidelined me from running for a week and a half, not to mention I missed 2 days of work and up to now, I am still coughing up a lung.
I decided to go for an easy run last Sunday. 3.1km in 21 min and 33 seconds and includes a 0.4km stretch with a very steep incline. I was winded. I was having a lot of trouble breathing and I was also still coughing quite a bit. Needless to say, I was very happy by the time I got back home. I was a little discouraged but I realized that I wasn’t 100% and I still went out for a run (and survived)… so in a way I’m glad I did it.
Last night I decided to push it a bit and run 4km after work. I also wanted to take advantage of the mild weather. Unfortunately I overdressed… newbie mistake! I wore a jacket and a hat and I was steaming by the end of the run. Plus, it wasn’t a proper running jacket so it was a little bulky and kept bouncing around. The first km was the toughest, I felt like I still wasn’t a hundred percent but I still pushed. Once I got my stride I felt a little better but I was still feeling really short of breath and of course, still coughing. Not the most pleasant 4km but at least I finished it.
I’m still motivated and I even joined Strava’s 10K challenge this month. My illness is not gonna get in the way of my goal… finishing a 10K run before the year ends. Wish me luck!
